Yuri Nakamura is the main antagonist-turned-deuteragonist of Angel Beats! and the female protagonist of Heaven's Door. She is the founder and leader of the Afterlife Battlefront, a school organization based in the afterlife. She leads a movement of many students fighting against a god who is responsible for their cruel fate.
Appearance[]
Yuri is a 160 cm (5'2) tall girl with fuchsia purple hair that reaches her upper back and has bangs that fall above her eyebrows. She has sea green eyes.
At the SSS pre-founding event, she wears the default school uniform consisting of a white polo shirt under a sandy brown blazer, a black short pleated skirt and black shoes. After SSS was established, she provided other uniforms, including herself, with features similar to regular sailor uniforms. Her uniform for girls has a blue collar, skirt, and dark pink ribbon. In the anime, Yuri often carries a pistol, usually a silver Beretta M9 chambered for 9mm.
She also wears black thigh-high socks and adorns her hair with a hairband with a yellow/green ribbon dangling on her right side. She sometimes wears a white beret during surgical briefings and glasses when using the computer.
As long as the SSS gathers at the Anti-Angel Headquarters, Yuri will be standing at the principal's desk or by the window. She is not told how long she was in the afterlife. However, in her special episode "Hell's Kitchen", Yusa tells her that if she had lived, she would have been a grandmother, and since she is still young, she could have lived more than 40 years in the afterlife.
Personality[]
Yuri has the qualities of a charismatic leader, and her determination and ability to remain calm even in difficult situations ultimately always earn her respect from other members of the SSS. She is very intelligent and can understand her situation and think for herself. However, she can also be a bit scatterbrained, as she once brought her new student, Yuzuru Otonashi, into a meeting about whether to change the club's name. Every now and then, she lets out a loud laugh like a high-handed young lady. Yusa once commented that she was like a villain.
Her nickname is "Yurippe", a nickname Hinata suggested because her mother had the same name and it felt strange to call her that. Most of her known SSS members only call her by her nickname (with the exception of Otonashi, Shiina, and Iwasawa). Although Yuri is the leader, she also has the utmost respect for the other members. This is seen when Yuri calls Iwasawa and Shiina with "san" at the end of their names, acknowledging their strengths and abilities.
She also knows full well that they will recover from "death", so she is not afraid to make the necessary sacrifices, usually involving the death of her subordinates. Nevertheless, she feels responsible for the lives of her men, and she is devastated by their loss. When it becomes clear that death (or a death-like condition) is permanent, she takes on the burden of fighting alone, even though she knows it's nearly suicidal, she puts everyone else's safety at risk. In the same way that the anime emphasizes her love for Angel's mapo tofu, Heaven's Door and 4-koma also heavily emphasize Yuri's dislike of natto (even as a child).
