Mutsuki Re anime design front view

Tooru Mutsuki is one of the main characters of Tokyo Ghoul:re. He's one of the main protagonists and the major antagonist who used to be a former member of the CCG and worked as part of the Quinx Squad was led by Haisei Sasaki.

Appearance[]

Mutsuki is a slim, bronze-skinned young man with dark ivy-colored hair, but as the series progresses his hair becomes lighter and he acquires a more athletic physique. He has pale olive eyes. However, in the anime, it's Sapphire. Although Tooru's right eye had a permanently activated rounded corner with a shadowy gray sclera. As a result, he wore a medical eyepatch to hide it, but eventually changed to a leather eyepatch given to him as a Christmas present by his former teacher, Hosei Sasaki. Like most ghoul investigators, Mutsuki usually wore formal clothing paired with a short white trench coat. Additionally, he also wears a strapless binder to flatten his chest, which is secured with a pair of clips. Due to past trauma, he has a large scar on his upper left chest and another on his right side.

Initially, Tooru styled his hair with a mid-length bob haircut with short fringe. After the promotion, he cuts his hair into a chic pixie cut.

While trapped in the torso, his hair color became lighter, and after Mutsuki regained his past memories, his hair grew to his shoulders and turned gray. He then cuts his hair short again, similar to how he had his hair tied at the beginning of the series. His hair is chin length and has a long fringe.

When Mutsuki intervenes in Takizawa and Amon's fight, it is revealed that his Kakumaru is no longer in a permanent activated state. Furthermore, after the Ryūshima landing operation, Tooru often wears plain white clothes.

After the clown siege, his hair looked a little disheveled and a little longer, taking on an even prettier ivory shade. During the Dragon War, Mutsuki is shown with near shoulder length hair.

After the Dragon Wars, Tooru appears with a classic short nape undercut, including a medium-length fringe. He maintains his gray hair color at the same time.

When Tooru was a teenager, he wore his hair in a fashionable hairstyle that reached his collarbone length. Additionally, his eye color appears to be darker, as opposed to how he looked as an adult.

Personality[]

Mutsuki has a kind and gentle personality, but at first she is shy and lacks confidence in herself. Mutsuki continues to suffer from anemia, and she ironically has an aversion to blood. His illness and low self-esteem cause him to fail as a ghoul investigator, to the point where he feels like he is not needed in the job. He expresses dissatisfaction with his own weakness and feels anger at his own lack of ability compared to his peers. However, he is reliable and hard-working, always following orders, in contrast to the more troublesome or lazy members of the team. Although he lacks self-confidence, he shows a strong desire to help others and does not hesitate to put himself in danger to protect innocent people. Eventually he became more confident and more assertive. He takes a more active role in helping his teammates work together and begins to reach out to others.

Flashbacks reveal that he was born female but was unable to reconcile his discomfort with his gender. Therefore, he begins to live as a man and uses very masculine personal pronouns, even if such informal language is not socially appropriate. It is in sharp contrast to his gentle personality and consistent respect for others. He shows great respect for Sasaki, Dr. Shiba, and the other investigators, even though he is treated poorly by them. She is also his boss's confidant, and is very fond of Sasaki, always helping him when his boss is feeling down.

Eventually, it is revealed that Mutsuki has suffered a blackout episode, leaving gaps in his memory. During these episodes, his personality traits change significantly and are frequently accompanied by acts of extreme violence. He has since retained no memory of these actions and denies any charges related to them. After seeing a hallucination of the events of the lost memory, Mutsuki reacts with fear and disgust. However, during his fight with Takizawa, he becomes mercilessly cruel and expresses his excitement when he crushes Takizawa's testicles. He also seriously injured Akira, who protected Takizawa from the attack.

After the clown siege, Mutsuki's personality became very unstable and violent, and he became obsessed with killing Touka and even willing to harm innocent citizens related to her.

Power & Abilities[]

Like other members of the Quinx Squad, Mutsuki also underwent preliminary training in combat and investigation procedures. His body was surgically modified to give him ghoul-like abilities. Initially, he was unable to use kagune, did not have superior physical abilities compared to his companions, and was unable to handle quinques well. However, he showed a significant level of regeneration. Some time after the kagune stabbed him in the arm, he used them without much trouble. He had exceptional eyesight and was able to discern details from a distance, even though his right eye was usually covered with an eyepatch.

After the Auction Mopping-up Operation, he became more skilled, being able to properly summon kagune. Some time after being promoted to rank 1, he learned to control the kagune and improved his dagger handling under Suzuya's tutelage. Sasaki, who was initially worried that Mutsuki wasn't cut out to be an investigator, has now improved enough to defend his position and put him at the front of the formation with Urie. It is considered to be very agile and is relied on to quickly approach dangerous enemies.

Quinx Physiology: After undergoing body modification, Mutsuki possesses Bikaku Kagune, and her physical abilities have improved.

  • Bikaku Kagune: His kagune has several segmented edges. He can extend it to long distances and use it to block, make powerful attacks, or restrain opponents. Initially, he was only able to manifest one kagune, but after gaining experience with Torso, he was able to manifest several kagune tails. During the Goat Extermination Mission, he displayed the ability to form Kagune into a cocoon as a means of blocking Yomo's interfacial movement. During the defense of Tokyo, it is revealed that he can track the formation of others' kagune and use his own against them.
  • Kagune Detachment: Mutsuki has shown that she can apply her knife-throwing skills to separate the pieces of the kagune.
  • Superhuman Durability: Mutsuki was able to withstand Urie's attack on the abdomen without flinching.
  • Superhuman Regeneration: After sustaining a fatal injury, Mutsuki has displayed the ability to regenerate and recover at inhuman speeds.
  • RC Control: Mutsuki has developed a method to hide his RC levels in the body, causing standard detection methods to fail. Dr. Shiba theorizes that this ability is related to the suppression of RC cells, as a blood test showed an unlikely RC level 3. Even in humans, the average RC cell number is between 200 and 500. Because of this ability, CCG researchers were unable to accurately assess Mutsuki's physical condition.
