Anti-Hero Overview

There is something you should know about me by now...I don't learn lessons.
~ Stan Smith.

We can't choose our fathers, but we can choose our father figures. I chose my mother. That set me back a little bit.
~ Stan Smith.

Good morning USA. I got a feeling that it's gonna be a wonderful day. The sun in the sky has a smile on his face and he's shining a salute to the American race. Oh boy, it's swell to say, good morning USA!
~ Stan Smith in the intro for American Dad!.

Stanford "Stan" Leonard Smith is the titular main protagonist of the FOX television series American Dad!.

He is a CIA agent who is Francine's husband, Steve's biological father and Hayley's stepfather, Klaus Heisler' owner and Jeff Fischer's stepfather-in-law. Although he is often shown as a protagonist villain, he is sometimes shown with redeeming qualities of a protagonist as he is a "brave patriotic hero of the United States". However, as the series went on, including flanderization, he became darker which may qualify him as a villainous protagonist than an actual hero.

He is voiced by Seth MacFarlane, who also voices Peter Griffin on Family Guy.

Appearance[]

Stan is tall—6’1”—with a pronounced chin often satirically likened to a “Jay Leno jaw.” He typically wears a blue suit adorned with a lapel pin: a simplified U.S. flag featuring three red-and-white stripes and a blue square.

Biography[]

Beginnings[]

Stan Smith (also known as Stanley or Stanford Smith) was born in 1963 to Jack and Betty Smith. Stan had a rough childhood as his father Jack never knew nothing about him before he walked out and divorced his wife, Betty. As now his father Jack becomes a criminal and spends his endless days in prison, Stan lives alone with his mother Betty as the two embrace and bond with each other as his mother Betty tries so hard to impress his son and make his life happy.

Love Life[]

A couple of years later on in his teen/adult years, Stan met Francine for the first time as she hitch hiked like the beauty drama queen she is, the two get into a relationship by the developing the love that can’t be broken, later on they get married and have two children Hayley and Steve.

Present Life[]

Stan is now a happily married man to his wife Francine, who is a typical housewife that puts to her into standards, his hippie stepdaughter, Hayley, who is rebellious and ultra liberal becoming like an activist protesting smarts and rights, he has a son named Steve who is a geekiest kid and outcast in school as he attends Pearl Bailey High School, He has a pet goldfish named Klaus and adopted a pet alien from Area 51 named Roger who is very intelligent as he is the mastery of disguise that he normally keeps secrets from humans, but he is still member of the family. Stan works full time at the C.I.A (Central Intelligence Agency) as he is part of the security team and the Head Deputy Director of Cooperation is his boss Avery Bullock.

Heroic Roles[]

Though Stan often acts like a villain protagonist as a result of his incompetence, stupidity, and paranoia, there are some occasions where he is shown with a redeeming side and sometimes perform heroic acts:

  • Pilot: Stopped Steve's self-loathing-induced tyranny when the latter went mad with power by admitting just how unpopular he himself had been in high school, which Stan allegedly had never admitted to anyone before.
  • For the most part, he shows remorse for his misdeeds and tries his best to correct any of his mistakes (mostly in the early seasons).
  • Con Heir: When he realised his father was manipulating him to participate in a jewel heist he refused to help him. When Jack then apologised for his actions Stan let him go, giving him a chance to be a better person and stop his criminal ways.
  • Francine's Flashback: Risked his life without hesitation to save an amnesiac Francine from a fire.
  • Stannie Get Your Gun: While quadriplegic, Stan moved himself directly into the path of an oncoming bullet to save Hayley.
  • Bullocks to Stan: Beat up Bullock to defend Hayley's honor, despite Bullock pretending it was some sort of test for Stan in order to avoid further injury.
  • Finances with Wolves: Directly risked sacrificing himself to save Francine's life, only surviving due to being protected by a giant hip-hop clock worn around his neck.
  • Dungeons and Wagons: Stan went as far as joining the risky and dangerous world of street-racing to satisfy Francine's misery, even if this decision was dangerous.
  • The Best Christmas Story Never: Overcame his inability to strike against President Ronald Reagan by carrying out the 1981 assassination attempt when he learned that his kids would never be born otherwise.
  • Joint Custody: Went to rescue Jeff from being wrongly arrested after learning that Jeff's father planned to frame his own son for his cannabis-growing operation.
  • Roots: Saved Steve's life when he was falling off a building.
  • Rabbit Ears: Rescued Al Tuttle from being imprisoned in the 1950’s television.
  • Yule. Tide. Repeat.: He gets stuck in a time loop and has to save his family from dying when their Christmas tree catches fire.
  • While he's far from a good father, in the end he does love his kids, even if he doesn't always like them. And even some of his worst moments could orginally come from good intentions, just being taken too far. And in the end he would take a bullet for them.
  • He regularly goes on dangerous CIA missions to protect his country he loves.
    • He teaches some refugees at a camp the values of fun, gives them clothes and helps them free themselves from the tyranny of armed men.
    • He killed a genocidal war criminal as part of a mission.
    • He killed a Swedish terrorist who was going to blow up a cafe full of innocent people.
