Sarafina is a minor heroine in the 1994 film The Lion King. She is the mother of Nala, the mother-in-law of Simba, the maternal grandmother of Kiara and Kion, the grandmother-in-law of Kovu and Rani and is a friend of Sarabi (her daughter's mother-in-law, her grandchildren's paternal grandmother, and also her son-in-law's mother).
In the original film, she was voiced by the late Zoe Leader in the original film and Yoshiko Takemura in the Japanese dub.
History[]
Little is known about Sarafina prior to the events of the film. What is known that she mated with an unnamed male lion with whom she had a daughter named Nala. At some point before or after Nala's birth, the unnamed male lion either passed away or left The Pride Lands, leaving Sarafina to raise her daughter Nala alone. Afterwards, Sarafina made arrangements with The Pride Lands' rulers King Mufasa (her daughter's father-in-law, her grandchildren's paternal grandfather and also her son-in-law's father) and Queen Sarabi for Nala to be betrothed to their first and only son Simba.
The Lion King[]
Sarafina is first seen sleeping inside Pride Rock with Nala, Mufasa, Sarabi and the rest of the pride when Simba comes in to wake up Mufasa, who had promised to give Simba a tour of The Pride Lands. She is later seen that day giving Nala a bath by licking her when Simba arrives, wanting Nala to come with him to "a cool place". Nala asks Sarafina if she can go with Simba to which Sarafina asks Sarabi what she thinks. Sarabi allows her son and Nala to go what she think to be the waterhole as long as Zazu goes with them.
The following night, Sarafina is seen mourning with Nala, Sarabi and the other lionesses (female lions) when Mufasa's younger brother, Nala's infamous uncle-in-law, Sarabi's infamous brother-in-law, and Simba's infamous paternal uncle Scar (her grandchildren's infamous paternal granduncle) informs them that Mufasa and Simba had perished in a stampede; unaware that only Mufasa died and that Simba fled The Pride Lands, she noticed the hyenas invading Pride Rock after hearing Scar's eulogy.
Though not seen again, it is possible that Sarafina takes part in the battle of Pride Rock after the pride discover that Scar had killed his older brother Mufasa in cold blood without showing any remorse and framed his nephew Simba for it. It is also possibly that Sarafina was one of the lionesses (female lions) that roar in praise of Simba defeating Scar (her son-in-law's infamous paternal uncle) and taking his rightful place as King of The Pride Lands.
