Syzoth, nicknamed Reptile is one of the main protagonists of the 2023 video game Mortal Kombat 1. Within Liu Kang's New Era, Syzoth never lost the Zaterrans. Unlike the rest of his people, his camouflage abilities are specially mutated to he point of being able to assume human form. However, he was treated as an outcast by the rest of his people for his mutation, and he left his home. At some point, his shapeshifting ability caught the interest of the sorcerer Shang Tsung, who would take Syzoth's family hostage, using their lives as leverage to force the Zaterran to work for him in his laboratory.
Syzoth is introduced in Shang Tsung's laboratory, where he serves as a jailor, after Johnny Cage, Kenshi Takahashi, Kung Lao and Baraka are captured when their mission to investigate Shang Tsung goes south. After discovering that Shang Tsung had already murdered his family, he joins them on their quest.

In the Liu Kang's new era, Syzoth is shown to care very deeply about his family, reluctantly assisting Shang Tsung with his vile experiments just to keep them safe, and even offering up his own life if it meant that they might be spared. Despite working for Shang Tsung, he is shown to still have compassion, offering Kenshi an ointment to relieve the pain of having had his eyes gouged out by a feral Mileena. He is also shown to be honorable, later assisting Liu Kang's champions in order to make amends for his previous actions.
History[]
Backstory[]
Among his fellow Zaterrans, Syzoth is special since he has the capacity to change his shape and assume human form. Only this made him more of an outsider among his people, and so Syzoth left the underground province of Zikandur in quest of a more respectable life. Sadly, Syzoth found himself penniless as the Outworlders on the surface showed no less hospitality. Desperate to escape his impoverishment, Syzoth joined a traveling carnival where he managed to earn a living and even started a family.
He would eventually come across Shang Tsung, who was only a common trader at the time. However, Shang sought to study Syzoth after learning sorcery, and when the Zaterran refused, he kidnapped his family. Syzoth soon discovered that working as the sorcerer's lab slave was an even worse job, requiring him to assist in numerous horrifying experiments. It was suggested that Syzoth's mutation was the source of Shang Tsung's signature shapeshifting ability.
Mortal Kombat 1[]
After Johnny Cage, Baraka, Kenshi, and Kung Lao are all taken prisoner during an abortive attempt to free Princess Mileena from Shang Tsung's grasp. Sending the four to Shang Tsung's actual laboratory reveals Syzoth to be their jailer. Giving Kenshi a special ointment to ease his sorrow over losing his eyes, he tells the group that he is of Zaterran descent and that he reluctantly took part in Shang Tsung's plot. Syzoth, in spite of their entreaties, tells them that it is either his family or them, and he has a group of cloned Tarkatans who serve him and place them in different rooms.
Syzoth deploys a device that causes electricity to attack the captured Johnny Cage and Kenshi while Baraka and Kung Lao are busy fighting them. Following his victory over a Super Tarkatan, Baraka manages to release the two Earthrealmers and ultimately defeat Syzoth. Syzoth begs to be killed, but Baraka spares him, saying he would have protected his family in the same way if he had been in his place.
After scolding Syzoth for letting Liu Kang's champions escape, Shang Tsung reappears and blasts Baraka and Johnny with a cloud of poisonous gas that swiftly fills the lab. He bids them all farewell and informs Syzoth that he had already killed his son and wife "many moons ago," leaving the Zaterran with the realization that he had been working needlessly to save loved ones who had been killed a long time ago. Enraged, Syzoth reaches out to seize Shang Tsung, but the sorcerer instantly teleports away from him. When Syzoth finds Shang Tsung sealed the exits after discharging the gas, the group tries to flee.
Baraka breaks down the door, letting them leave the laboratory. The Earthrealmers are determined to find Sun Do once they are outdoors in order to return Kenshi to Earthrealm. Baraka is unable to enter the city, but Syzoth offers to carry them the remaining distance as a gesture of goodwill. As the group traverses the Living Forest, Baraka discloses that it is teeming with souls. Syzoth states that because his people were forced to live underground in Zikandur due to abuse at the hands of Outworld's surface inhabitants, there are no Zaterran spirits. Syzoth elaborates on his former existence, revealing how his shapeshifting made him an outcast and how Shang Tsung blackmailed him into allowing him to be researched in response to Kung Lao's questioning about how he met Shang Tsung.
He also affirms Shang Tsung's conspiracy with Rain and General Shao, although he notes he has only heard bits and pieces of their plans. After a misunderstanding combat, the gang teams up with the Netherrealm demon Ashrah and changes their mission to locate an Outworlder named Quan Chi, whose connection to Shang Tsung may lead them to the sorcerer. To Johnny's dismay, Syzoth consumes a flying insect earnestly along the road. While this was going on, Ashrah describes how she was put on the path to purification and reveals that Quan Chi and Shang Tsung had a common, unidentified benefactor who taught them both how to use magic.
When Syzoth and the others eventually come upon Quan Chi and his friends, they make an effort to stop the former from utilizing one of his soul stealers. Quan Chi manages to drain the Living Forest of its souls and combine them into a single body, Ermac, who swiftly starts taking the heroes in kombat, while Nitara, Darrius, Sareena, and Havik hold off the heroes. The only other person to successfully launch an attack using his natural form is Syzoth, who, like the rest, is thereafter overcome by a telekinetic explosion. After making a full recovery, he fights alongside Ashrah against Havik, Darrius, and Quan Chi, but Ermac still poses a threat, using his telekinesis to send Syzoth and Baraka flying onto the ground.
Thankfully, Kenshi intervenes to save them after seeing Sento's true power. With Ashrah's assistance, Sento defeats Ermac. After Ashrah destroys the soul stealer, the captive spirits are released. One of the spirits grabs Quan Chi and saps his vitality, turning his skin white and knocking him to sleep. After winning the fight, the party decides to bring Quan Chi back to Earthrealm so Liu Kang can interrogate him. The party travels to Sun Do for the evening festival. Syzoth scans the grounds from the rooftops, noting the high security numbers, while the others pose as partygoers, including the unconscious Quan Chi.
While he makes a diversion, he orders the others to proceed to the stage and then through the portal gate to Earthrealm on the right. Kenshi reminds him that Syzoth will also be watched, but Syzoth responds that they need to see him in order to catch him. When Syzoth instantly discloses his invisibility, Johnny is impressed and exclaims, "Damn!", comparing his move to "going full Predator." As the masked group moves across the festival grounds, Syzoth sets off many rockets, frightening the onlookers. Reiko and Li Mei pursue the Zaterran after General Shao notices him atop one of the buildings and assumes that his presence indicates the Earthrealmers are also close.
Syzoth is knocked to the ground by Reiko's shuriken blow, but he gets back up and becomes invisible once more, leaving green blood traces in his wake. Syzoth is eventually caught up by Li Mei and Reiko, but he refuses arrest because he knows that General Shao will have him executed even though Li Mei has offered to listen to him out. Syzoth overcomes the two with sorrow and Kenshi's help, but not before Kitana, Tanya, and Khameleon strike. Syzoth also defeats them, knowing he has no time to defend himself. Syzoth and Kenshi rescue Johnny's party as they are encircled by Generao Shao and his guards (Quan Chi fleeing during the conflict).
Shao is directly confronted by Syzoth, who threatens to expose his plot to the entire Outworld. Shao disputes this with Syzoth’s death. In spite of this, Syzoth triumphs, and as Motaro and other guards close in, he and the others flee for the portal (Johnny sucker punching Goro on the way). They are welcomed by Liu Kang upon entering Earthrealm, who says he is already familiar with Ashrah and Syzoth's names. Ashrah then inquires as to whether Liu Kang is acquainted with Quan Chi, Shang Tsung's partner. Liu Kang asked them to come with him and share their experiences, expressing stark anxiety at the idea of a new Deadly Alliance.
The second Battle of Armageddon features numerous iterations and combinations of Syzoth/Reptile, on both the Forces of Darkness and Light respectively. Furthermore, Syzoth can be chosen to be the Final Warrior, who fights his way to the top of the Pyramid, and helps Liu Kang vanquish Shang Tsung and Quan Chi.
After Titan Shang Tsung’s defeat, Syzoth is recruited as Outworld’s emissary to the Zaterrans, as thanks for his aid against General Shao's rebellion. Syzoth embraced the chance to show his people that his mutation wasn't to be feared, and was pleasantly surprised to be welcomed. However, Syzoth would discover records revealing that many other Zaterrans were able to shapeshift, like him, but were persecuted by their corrupt goverment. Horrified at his discovery, he vowed to discover who enacted this policy and stop them once and for all. On a more personal note, Syzoth and Ashrah would go onto form a romantic relationship.

“ | After fleeing Outworld, I hadn't expected to return. But, then, I also hadn't expected the new Empress to make me an offer I couldn't refuse. To thank me for stopping General Shao's rebellion, she asked me to be her emissary to the Zaterrans. Going home, bearing the seat of the royal house, I would show, once and for all, that my mutation wasn't to be feared. That it wasn't a source of shame. To my surprise, I was welcome. But those warm smiles hid a dark secret. I stumbled upon a trove of official records which showed that my shapeshifting ability isn't unique. Many Zaterrans are born with it but are killed by their government to keep it from spreading. Who started this barbaric policy, who is now enforcing it, is unknown. But I will find out. And I will put an end to this madness. | „ |
