~ Minion's catchphrase.
“
Just a few more alterations, and I'll be done with your most terrifying cape yet. I'm calling it... the Black Mambaaaa....
Due to a cease-and-desist order from popular fast food chain Mr. Minion’s Meat-sicles, I can no longer call myself Minion. So, Megamind gave me a new name. Ol’ Chum. It means, “old friend.”
„
~ Minion in the second film.
Ol' Chum, formerly known as Minion, or simply Chum, is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Roxanne Ritchi) of the Megamind franchise.
He is Megamind's lifelong sidekick, initially helping him with his villainous goals, but after Tighten begins to terrorize Metro City, he and Megamind decide to take action to stop him, with the two of them becoming the new heroes of Metro City afterwards. He is originally known as Minion in the original film, until he was forced to change his name due to a cease and desist order from the fast-food chain "Mr. Minion's Meatsicles" in the second film.
He is voiced by David Cross, who also played Crane from Kung Fu Panda. In Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate and Megamind Rules, he is now voiced by Josh Brener.
Minion is a green, alien fish with a light blue face and underbelly. He has dark green stripes running across the side of his body, green tendrils on his underside, glowing tendrils on his head as well as an antenna installed onto the top of his head. He also has sharp teeth, an underbite, and large, green eyes.
As for his body, Minion inhabits a simian mechanical suit that has patches covered in black fur, as well as metal details. He's contained within a cylindrical glass tank filled with water, acting as the "head" of the suit. When disguised as "Space Step-Mom", Minion dons a curly blond wig and a pink apron.
Personality[]
Unlike his egotistical and narcissistic boss, Minion is considerably more humble and polite, but maintains his villainous status despite his lack of outright antagonism when he aids Megamind in his crimes. Even so, the Minion has committed a series of pretty evil acts on behalf of Megamind; among them his humorous reaction to Metro Man's death and how the two caused rampage throughout Metro City after his death. During this period, Minion was clearly more fulfilled by causing chaos than Megamind was due to the understanding that battles between good and evil revolved around the other side becoming triumphant, while after discovering that Megamind was unfulfilled without having to oppose herself a hero, she began to be visually impaired. this realization. Despite this, Minion never revels in other people's suffering.
Although his purpose in life was to protect and serve the Megamind, the Minion clearly has reservations outside of his master's actions and ego. When Metro Man was "killed" and Megamind, drowning in his own victory, he claims it was a team effort between the two. Second, when Megamind revealed his plans to create a new hero to fight, Minion verbally expressed concern about his plan to create a being to rival Metro Man's powers, as opposed to keeping his reservations about Megamind's evil plans to himself. If necessary, Minion will protect Megamind even from himself, like when he saw his master abandon his purpose from the villain by going on a date with Roxanne Ritchi, the Minion steps out of his place by hiding the keys from him and physically stand in his way. . So he is willing to fight his employer if it means protecting him.
Despite his kind nature, Minion is not necessarily a quick forgiver, having tricked Megamind into letting him out of prison while disguised as a warden instead of releasing him immediately due to his previous harsh words towards him and his neglect of him. advice on how to give Hal superpowers. He also has a malicious, treacherous and somewhat cruel sense of humor, such as faking death when his fishbowl broke after sacrificing himself to fight Tighten. This shows that the Minion, despite being a good soul and helping his master, has a mischievous side to him.
Biography[]
Megamind[]
At the beginning of the movie, he and Megamind were sent to Earth as infants due to the destruction of their own planet, and together they had to face being neglected by society, eventually becoming supervillains and rivals to the famed superhero Metro Man. But it wasn't until Megamind finally defeated Metro Man by blowing up the observatory he was trapped in using an orbital laser, which allowed him, Minion, and their army of Brain-Bots to take over Metro City by force, though it turns out later that Metro Man faked his death to retire as a superhero to pursue a career in music.
However, Megamind feels empty after his victory, so he decides to create a new hero by creating a serum composed of Metro Man's powers and injecting a person who'd be worthy to use them for good. Of course, Minion secretly doesn't approve of this, but reluctantly tags along. After the serum is accidentally injected into a Roxanne Ritchi's cameraman Hal Stewart, Minion (posing as Hal's 'Space Step-Mom') helps Megamind (posing as Hal's 'Space-Dad') in training Hal to become a hero and using the powers properly. Unaware to Megamind and Minion, Hal (who calls himself Tighten) doesn't plan to use his powers to do the greater good but to win Roxanne's heart to himself.
Eventually, Minion's friendship with Megamind was put at stake when he learned that Megamind has been secretly dating Roxanne under his 'Bernard' disguise. To Megamind's dismay, Minion leaves him. Later on, Minion is visibly disturbed when he witnesses Tighten's rampage on TV. In an attempt to presumably make things right, Minion breaks into Metro City Prison, where Megamind had surrendered himself to, and disguises himself as the Warden. Megamind shows remorse to his misdeeds, among them his hurting of Minion. They reconcile, and set off to defeat Tighten, with Minion disguising himself as Megamind to rescue Roxanne, though he inadvertently breaks his glass dome in the process, and tells Roxanne Megamind is still at work. After Megamind removes Tighten's powers, he sees to Minion and they remark on their victory. Minion seemingly dies, but Megamind, annoyed by the ruse, tosses him into the fountain, where he instantly recovers and starts celebrating.
Minion and Megamind would later be hailed as Metro City's new protectors. Having repaired his glass dome, Minion pilots Megamind's battle suit while playing their boombox.
Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate[]
Two days after the events of the first film, Megamind now takes on the role of defender of Metro City. Along with Minion, now called Ol' Chum, stop the criminal trio known as the Go-Fish gang form stealing a priceless fish. However, Chum, feeling abandoned and unappreciated in Megamind’s efforts, tells Megamind that he wants to be his sidekick. After being rejected, Chum states that he will look for other opportunities, which Megamind allows.
Chum has taken up work at a run-down diner, where he has remodeled the diner in order to make the place popular again. Megamind, who has been trying to find a way to defeat the Doom Syndicate, tries to get his help to defeat the Doom Syndicate. However, after realizing that he might belong more in the store than with him, Megamind regrets letting Chum go.
However, after the Doom Syndicate have overpowered Megamind, and has been motivated again thanks to Roxanne and Kekio, Chum returns when Megamind tells him that he is indeed his sidekick. Megamind, Chum, Roxanne and Keiko team up to face the Syndicate of Doom but fail to stop the launch. They manage to redirect Metro City safely back to Earth. Roxanne is elected the new mayor of Metro City, while Keiko launches a newly designed hero signal as Megamind feels accomplished in his new team.

Trivia[]
Minion, as with Megamind, also has a holographic watch. He only uses it twice.
His robotic suit is an obvious parody of Ro-Man from infamous b-movie Robot Monster.
Minion’s name being changed to Ol' Chum was likely because the Minion name was also used in the Despicable Me movies. This is supported by the fact that Dreamworks claimed it was for legal reasons, which seems odd since both franchises started in 2010; Despicable Me came out a few months earlier, however, rehashing "Minion" wasn't a problem back then. Not to mention Dreamworks and Illumination are also both owned by Universal Studios.
