~ Jonah Marshall to Adam Murray in the middle of the Ghost Cat case.

I wish we never looked for your [mom]. Because she is DEAD and GONE and we were never gonna get her back.
~ Jonah lashes out to Adam about his motives.

Jonah Edmund Marshall[1] is a supporting character in the 2021 analog horror web series The Mandela Catalogue. He serves as a supporting character in Act 1 and as a minor character in Act 2.

Jonah is the third member of the Bythorne Paranormal Society (BPS), a cheap inter-county paranormal investigation society, and the one-sided best friend of it's co-leader, Adam Murray. His role in the society, however, seems to be out of a desperate need to hang out with his "friend" instead of genuine want to capture the paranormal on film, as evidenced by his cowardice: his most defining trait.

Like his fellow BPS members, Jonah is named after, and is presumed to be a modern "equivalent/incarnation" of, a biblical figure. This obviously being the figure of Jonah, who had abandoned the town of Nineveh which was in need of redeeming. This could potentially mirror his actions, as he had abandoned Adam Murray when he was about to listen to the Intruder's words, thus abandoning God.

He was portrayed by Gabriel Linan.

Personality[]

Jonah was a carefree, crack wise individual, and described to bring a positive energy to the otherwise serious BPS. In Vol. 2, when Adam told him to be serious, he went further to make up a joke and annoy him, when Adam told him to open the truck, Jonah told him to be sure that he got everything they needed for the investigation.

He's also a stoner and a dealer. In Vol. 2, he sarcastically mentions that the Woman might be "as high as [he]'s gonna be in 30 minutes". And, in Adam's DMs in Vol. 4, he's seen recommending drug doses to Adam.

His most defining character trait is his cowardice, which is showcased throughout the entirety of Vol. 2. He's seen actively avoiding entering the Woman's house and the "Ghost Cat". When confronted about this by Adam, he makes up an excuse saying that "he's allergic to cats". When it became clear that there was more to the case than just a Ghost Cat, Jonah's immediate reaction was to panic and to beg Adam to leave, to the point that he left him to die when things began going south.

Despite this, he still upholds genuine respect and concern for Adam; he is initially hesitant at leaving him behind, only doing so when he makes it clear that he doesn't want to leave with him after a heated argument. And, even then, when he did leave it's implied that Jonah was heavily regretful of the fact, as The Intruder torments him with this fact.

Jonah is also very skeptic regarding the existence of the Alternates, completely disregarding all of the evidence that might point out to their existence such as the mayor making infographics about their effect in the County, several callers calling the BPS for Alternate encounters. He even goes as far as calling the Woman crazy and implying that she was under the influence when calling them.

Biography[]

Background[]

Jonah was born to the lawyer Mervin Marshall and an unnamed woman[2] on March 7th, 1988.[1]

Jonah was found online and later recruited into the BPS by Adam following Sarah's permanent retirement from paranormal investigations.[3] It's implied that Jonah would develop a one-sided friendship with Adam Murray, whom he sold drugs to[4], during this period.

2009 Winter Break[]

Adam and Jonah were responsible for stealing technologies that were banned by the government of United States to keep The Intruder away from appearing, they had also committed a car robbery.

Due to their crimes and connection to the BPS, they are wanted by the FBI for a 100 thousand dollars reward.

The "Ghost Cat" Case[]

Adam and Jonah are dialed by an unidentified woman (which is likely The Intruder), which told them to investigate The Torres residence at 3 nights to go see her cat "Jonny", which has passed away years ago, with Jonah calling her cat an alternate, on which woman denies and offers 500 dollars as a reward.

As Adam and Jonah are preparing to leave, their car could not start, so they gave an option: steal another car or try necessarily to fix it, while Adam is trying to fix the car, Jonah eats chips and watch him fixing it. On their way to start investigation in Torres residence, Jonah states that the half of him doesn't believe that there are alternates and the mayor is unintelligent to make this whole infographic. They both started a talk revealing that they are orphans who were running their entire lifes.

After the ride, Adam starts an investigation in the Torres residence, He asks if Jonny is at peace, which led Jonah saying that he looks dumb, Adam later then asks him what does he need to do for a ghost cat on which he replies asking if a ghost cat will meow at them to death, Adam tells him to take it seriously with Jonah saying that he doesn't have to on which Adam agrees because he believes that Jonah is scared to go inside the room, Jonah argues that he is not scared and says that he has a cat allergy as an excuse not to enter the room.

Jonah asks if he see anything in the house on which he investigates with Adam denying since there are no meows coming from a cat and asks if he has seen anything on the camera on which he replies that he did, he is scrubbing through the cameras and doesn't believe that he saw anything. Jonah states that he doesn't want to go to this house and Adam says that he does not see anything and they're been there for three nights with Jonah begging to leave this house because he dislikes it, Adam asks him to suck up for three nights to no answer from Jonah.

After the GPS got corrupted by the 333 corruption, Adam asks where did it come from on which Jonah believes that it come from the house and tells him not to enter the house on which Adam refuses to listen to him, Adam believes that he's just "overreacting" and enters the house.

Adam bought a spirit box and asks few questions, Jonah later then asks if he is coming through which him responding "loud and clear", The Intruder later then mimics Jonah's voice and repeatedly says "OH MY GOD BEHIND YOU!" with Adam telling them to shut up, Jonah asks what did he do on which he tells him to forget it.

After The Preacher's attempt to afflict Adam with M.A.D, Jonah dms Adam asking why didn't he come to their car after the conversation with him and tells him not to pretend he doesn't know that he didn't stare at the pictures, Jonah later then states that he is hungry and doesn't want to leave him behind, Jonah tells Adam to get in their car and order a pizza and finally, Adam has responded admitting that he hear the meows from Jonny and tells him to call him on radio.

After the chat, Adam realizes that Jonah is now serious as he ever been, Jonah understands that he got screwed around, he states that he is too devastated that he is not as broken as he is and apologies to Adam that he can't continue helping him carry the burden. Adam asks what does that have to do with anything with Jonah saying that he is reaching his limits and Adam runs every chance he gets with him denying and Jonah loudly tells him to listen, he says that he is not invincible, his mother is gone and they won't get her back, he later then apologies again for the lives that they have lead and states that he will be joining her mother if he will walk down the stairs. Adam later then yells at Jonah back telling him to leave.

Jonah later then leaves Adam behind and encounters The Intruder, they're making him feel guilty for leaving his friend behind, The intruder later then tells him to open his eyes repeatedly, which led Jonah to yell at them and tells them to shut up, Jonah later then gets out of the car while crying and car's emergency blinkers on and[5] Jonah ends up dying.[1]

Aftermath[]

Adam was walking until he found the car and Jonah's corpse, he later then gets into the car and leaves Jonah behind, after he got home, he messages Sarah revealing that Jonah has died, which made her shocked and tells him to call her, after Adam dialled her, she shows her anger at him and forces him to make a memorial video, saying that Jonah is the only person that cared about him. In the memorial video that he was forced to make, Adam tells that he has died surrounding by his loved ones before being interrupted.

Trivia[]

  • Judging by the now deleted Vol. 333 teaser trailer, Jonah was originally meant to play a bigger role in the series. However, due to his actor Gabriel Linan leaving the Mandela Crew following some drama, this role was most likely discarded and Jonah's fate was retconned to being killed at the end of Vol. 2.
  • He's the only Mandela Catalogue "villain" to be a human.
