~ Manual Description of Hat Kid.
Hat Kid is the titular main protagonist of Gears for Breakfast's indie platform video game franchise, A Hat in Time.
She is an alien-resembling little infant superheroine who embarks through a thrilling quest to collect the scattered Time Pieces, the fuel for her spaceship, so she can return home. Her true name is shrouded in mystery up to this day as it is never mentioned in-game, and in the instruction manual, she is listed as "Me," due to it being written virtually in first person. She writes her name in Korean-like symbols when signing the Snatcher's contracts. Throughout the game's story, Hat Kid is a young girl who is attempting to return to her home world via her spaceship, and embarks through a long-lasting and glorious adventure when the Mafia Goons interfere with her spaceship.
Hat Kid is voiced by Apphia Yu, who also voiced You Watanabe in Love Live! Sunshine!!, Rika Furude in Higurashi:GouandSotsu, Tsukasa Shishio from Stone Wars (as a child), You Watanabe from Love Live! Sunshine!! in the English dub, and Spinel Sun's false form from Cardcaptor Sakura in the Clear Card Arc through the English dub.
Hat Kid is a short and young little girl with light blue eyes and brunette hair. She wears a big, purple shirt with a bright yellow cape sporting a large zipper, as well as white pants and brown boots. She also wears a variety of hats, her favorite of which is a big, purple top-hat with a yellow stripe, also known as the "Kid's Hat."
In all respects, Hat Kid is represented as a small and traditional little human child, but the sole and potential difference between her alien species and traditional humans is the presence of bones in her ponytail when the CAW Agents take an X-ray photograph of her. Although not officialized as canon, speculation (using the meters shown in the food level from the DLC, Seal the Deal) states that her height is approximately and potentially 2’3.
Personality[]
Hat Kid is shown to have a childlike, energetic and happy-go-lucky personality, almost typically expressing a smile on her face and just sporadically showing sorts of negative emotions. She is shown to be able to act both childishly and maturely depending on whether the situation calls for it, seems to not be entertained with fighting or singing, and tries to make friendships with whoever she meets, such as Mustache Girl. Hat Kid's aforementioned energetic and childlike personality is especially shown through the innocent nature of her voicelines and idling animations.
She is also shown to be rather mischievous, especially with the Mafia, such as when she knocks Mafia Goons off of ledges in Mafia Town, or when she burned paintings containing the souls of trapped individuals in a fire in order to assist a group of Fire Spirits ending their own lives in Subcon Forest. Despite this, she is also drastically merciful, as shown during the level, Your Contract has Expired, in Subcon Forest, when Hat Kid attempts to befriend The Snatcher, despite being revealed via her diary that she only defaces Snatcher's contract by asking to be his "friend" to spite him, which is an addition to the somewhat sarcastic portion of her nature, but this does not make her sassy at all, even through plenty of flavor dialogue throughout the game.
Hat Kid can be occasionally shy, such as when Mustache Girl asks for her name, or during her idling animation where she stops playing with dolls because she thinks someone might be watching. In contrast, she is heavily frank and emotive in her diary entries, calling out several people and situations on her adventure as ironic and/or unpleasant. In fact, she is shown to be irritated and upset by most of whatever she encounters during her journey, especially in Subcon Forest and Mafia Town. She is also typically shown to be a brave and fearless superheroine. However, there are a few times when she is shown to be scared and terrified. Major examples include; whenever she falls into one of the Snatcher's traps and he makes his appearance, or more especially when dealing with Queen Vanessa, Hat Kid can be seen shaking in fear. And when she is discovered by the Empress after stealing back her time pieces and when she witnesses the Empress confronting one of her employees through violence, Hat Kid is shown to be terrified and traumatized of her wrath.
Biography[]
Hat Kid is introduced as a little alien girl who is taking her space ride home, but Hat Kid's ship is intercepted by one of the Mafia Goons, who demands that she must pay a toll because she is over the Mafia Town. When Hat Kid refuses to pay, the Mafia Goon busts in through the window in a fit of rage, causing Hat Kid and the ship's fuel, the Time Pieces, to be blown out into space. After landing in Mafia Town, Hat Kid must fight and work to recover her lost time pieces.
Powers and abilities[]
Hat Abilities[]
Hat Kid possesses a lot of abilities via her various kinds of hats:
Her Favorite Hat: Hat Kid can pinpoint the location of the next Time Piece around the area she is in.
Sprint Hat: Hat Kid can run at quick and superhuman level of speed, and on some occasions, summon a scooter for her to ride in.
Brewing Hat: Hat Kid can concoct an explosive potion that can destroy some props.
Ice Hat: Hat Kid can transform herself into an ice statue and perform a ground pound. She can also use it on some paddle boards to reach areas from higher up.
Dweller Mask: Hat Kid can see through the eyes of the Subcon Dwellers and reveal invisible platforms.
Time Stop Hat: Hat Kid can temporarily stop time around her. When using the Time Stop Hat, her body becomes smoke-black and she has a teal heart (the same as the pink hearts inside the Heart Pons) in her chest.
Pon Usage[]
Throughout the game, Hat Kid gains usage of Pons, the predominate currency of the game. Notable kinds include:
Green Pons, which act as a means to purchase badges that affect her abilities and new hat flairs and dyes. These pons are green in color (hence the name) and hold a green diamond inside them.
Heart Pons, which can heal her of inflicted damage and, in the finale, can grant her incredible powers. These pons are red in color and hold a pink hearts inside them.
Rift Pons, which are useful to open the exit vault in purple time rifts. These pons are gold in color and hold a crown inside them.
Energy Pons, which are useful to remove electric barriers. The pons are blue in color and hold a lightning bolt inside them.
Trivia[]
Hat Kid does not like singing, as stated in her diary.
Her "smug dance" is a reference to a dance Bob can perform in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp whenever an error occurs on the app, with the cat smile to match. This has became a viral meme in the franchise, with the Peace and Tranquility song being remixed with the song Dancin' by Aaron Smith.
There was originally going to be an adult Hat Kid in the game's ending, but the entire ending was scrapped.
Hat Kid is a playable character in the game Tunche, where she helps four other heroes unravel the secrets of the mysterious Amazonian jungle. She even makes a cameo as an NPC in the game Here Comes Niko.
Some of the hat flairs, dyes, and costumes the player can equip have references to other games, changes in ability appearance, or just cosmetic details:
In terms of hat flairs:
The common, rare, exotic, speedrun event, and backer exclusive hat flairs for Hat Kid's favorite hat do not change the hat in terms of shape and just give simple decorations; a bow for the common hat flair, a bow and stripes for the rare hat flair, a bow, stripes, and a red rose for the exotic hat flair, a bow and a digital stopwatch for the speedrun event hat flair, and a bow and a green rose for the backer exclusive hat flair.
The common, exotic, Vanessa's Curse and event exclusive Sprint Hat flairs have unique design features, as the common Sprint Hat flair turns the Sprint Hat a ladybug headband that changes color according to the dyes, the exotic Sprint Hat flair turns the Sprint Hat into the hat of Thor the Inventor, one of the games cut characters, and the Vanessa's Curse Sprint Hat flair recolors the Sprint Hat into a punk hat (matching the Gothic Umbrella weapon), and the event Sprint Hat flairs turn the Sprint Hat into either a "Time Piece Juice Hat" or "Moonglasses" The exotic hat flair also possesses enhancing eyepieces on the goggles and even a microphone, though they are purely cosmetic, while the event hat flairs are based on a Discord sticker and the cut character Moonjumper.
The common, exotic, Nyakuza Metro exclusive, and Vanessa's Curse exclusive Brewing Hat flairs recolors the Brewing Hat to pink and white stripes, which is a reference to Vivian from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a large sun hat decorated with a sunflower on top of it with sunglasses (referencing the same hat and sunglasses worn by Audrey Bourgeois from Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir), a headband with cat ears & a cat mask attached to it, a wearable donut, and a yellow lampshade. The explosions of the potions thrown by Hat Kid also change according to the hat flairs (dollar explosions for the Nyakuza Metro hat flair, and sprinkles & lightning for the Vanessa's Curse hat flairs).
The rare, exotic, and Vanessa's Curse exclusive Ice Hat flairs turn the Ice Hat into a purple & yellow nightcap with cat ears, and referencing the Nyakuza Metro DLC, a nautilus shell with blue tentacles on the side, referencing the Lord Helix meme from Twitch Plays Pokemon, a witch hat with fox ears, and a wearable block of ice. The former from Vanessa's Curse exclusive Ice Hat flairs references the Fox Box costume in the game Balan Wonderworld.
Both Ice Hat flairs change the ice statue appearance, turning Hat Kid into an ice block with the hat still visible above when used. Other ordinary Ice Hat flairs do not affect the statue's appearance.
The Dweller Mask hat flairs turn the Dweller Mask into the same masks worn by the Subcon Dwellers. The smile for the common hat flair is somewhat the same as the LED masks worn by the exorcists in Hazbin Hotel.
The common, exotic, and Nyakuza Metro exclusive Time Stop Hat flairs turn the Time Stop Hat into either a hat resembling a panda & squid fusion (referencing the Inklings in the Splatoon series), a tin foil hat with crazy-eyed goggles, a helmet with an earpiece placed inside a translucent orb, or a pair of headphones with two LED light circles having a constant dimming up and down effect.
