Dr. Cain is a posthumous character of the Mega Man X series, he was the one who discovered X from the remains of Dr. Light's laboratory, and as a result gained the knowledge to produce Reploids. He also created Sigma and the Maverick Hunters.
Appearance[]
Dr. Cain is an elderly human male of average height. He has a bald head, a sharp nose, and a long beard. He usually wears a blue robe with a red collar and carries a cane. In The Day of Σ, he is seen sitting in front of a large stationary life support machine.
Personality[]
Dr. Cain is a wise and thoughtful man. He cares deeply for X and all the Reploids he helped create, as if they were his own sons. He particularly cares about his masterpiece, Sigma, and feels great guilt for the destruction he has caused. He plays a fairly active role in Maverick Hunters in his first three games of the series and shows his dedication to justice. In The Day of Σ, he becomes more thoughtful and melancholy, as he is already nearing the end of his life.
Background[]
Dr. Cain was first and foremost a brilliant robotics scientist with an interest in archaeology. He discovered X on April 14, 21XX, during an archaeological expedition seeking fossils that could prove his research on Mesozoic plants. It was buried in the basement of Dr. Light's abandoned laboratory. Excited by this monumental discovery, Cain collaborated with X and using his design he created the first Reploid on November 22nd, which went into mass production soon after. Because Cain did not fully understand X's design and did not diagnose the Reploids as rigorously as X, some Reploids developed glitches and became Mavericks. To counter the activities of such dangerous Reploids, Cain agreed to form the Maverick Hunters, and his most advanced creation, Sigma, became the leader of this new organization. Some time later, Cain is supposedly sent to the mysterious Maverick at Sigma's request to research and repair Zero.
Biography[]
Mega Man X2[]
Dr. Cain was able to recover Zero's control chip from the conflict, but not the rest of his body. He continues to work with Maverick Hunterd and tracks the location of the Sigma Chip to the Maverick factory at the beginning of the story.
In the climax, Dr. Cain identifies the location of the X-Hunter base where X is infiltrating. If X is able to collect his three parts of Zero from X-Hunters, Dr. Cain will reassemble X in the finale battle at the Central Computer. If not, Cain will be unable to stop the X-Hunters from stealing Zero's control chip and using it to resurrect Zero as a maverick loyal to Sigma.
Mega Man X3[]
Dr. Cain is absent during the attack on Hunter Base by Doppler's forces, but later reappears and speaks with X and Zero. Analyzing the chips of the defeated Mavericks, he discovers that Dr. Doppler steals parts from advanced Reploids to build powerful fighting bodies, and locates an underground laboratory located at Point D. When Zero is damaged by Mosquitus, he is forced to receive repairs from Cain while X finishes the battle.
The Day of Σ[]
Dr. Cain speaks with Sigma over dinner at his home in Abel City and they discuss X's limited performance on the battlefield. Cain explains that X's hesitation and empathy are what make him special compared to other Reploids, which intrigues Sigma, who says he sees X as a benchmark for Reploid evolution. Now it looks like this.
Later, when Sigma launches a missile attack on Abel City, Dr. Cain's house is caught in an explosion, presumably killing him. He remains calm in his final moments, pondering whether Maverick is punishment for humanity's arrogance, but he seems to refute this before being consumed by the light. He may have been scheduled to die in the new continuity that would be established in the remake, but that never happened, so there is no official comment.
