Dave is a supporting character in Illumination's Despicable Me franchise, serving as the tritagonist of Despicable Me, a major character in its 2015 prequel film, Minions, a supporting character in Despicable Me 4, and a recurring character throughout the rest of the franchise.
Dave serves as one of the more mature and intelligent of the Minions, and serves as the leader of such species (like Kevin and Mel). Unlike most of the other Minions, Dave defects himself from dwelling into villainy and decides to remain heroic. Being on the search for a master to serve/assist and support in the earliest timeline, Dave and the Minions were forced to evacuate their cave after accidentally knocking out a leader of Yetis, and Dave navigated Kevin, Stuart and Bob's current location in England and joined forces with Felonious Gru after Scarlet Overkill and Herb Overkill's deserved defeat.
Dave was formally voiced by Chris Renaud in the first Despicable Me film, but Dave is now voiced by the same voice actor and director, Pierre Coffin, alongside the rest of the other Minions from Despicable Me 2 onward.
Appearance[]
Dave is a two-eyed yellow humanoid creature with an average size, and smooth and combed hair. In his Mega incarnation, his limbs and overall body shape has been drastically amplified in size.
Personality[]
Similar to Kevin, Dave is an intelligent, selfless and kind minion, but also shows a pure sense of humor. However, Dave is also heavily prone to committing mistakes and accidents, demonstrated when Dave launched a rocket launcher towards a group of Minions out of excitement when Gru announced his plans to steal the moon, although he eventually becomes remorseful of it. Another prime example is Dave accidentally exposing himself to the Purple Minions after he blew raspberry at them to flow with the personality of a Purple Minion, leading into a chase that almost cost his life, along with Gru and Stuart's lives too.
Dave is skillful at video gaming, like his best friend, Stuart, shown when the duo are playing on a gaming console. Dave likes ice cream, as shown when Gru calls him and Stuart while having an Ice Cream Party, he still has Ice Cream in is mouth before he heads to Gru. He is typically overexcited as shown when he fired his Rocket Launcher, his signature weapon, but as mentioned before, this makes him accident-prone. He also has professionalism in the usage of weapons and baking cupcakes, among other food. Dave is also a surprisingly talented fighter, demonstrated in Despicable Me 2, when he swung around the pole to kick a Purple Minion and launched it towards a series of other Purple Minions, knocking them all off.
Additionally, Dave is so honorable that while Mel the other Minions quit serving Gru after no longer returning to villainy, Dave and Jerry choose to remain with Gru and continue assisting him, and also gone as far as creating a wonderful cupcake for Lucy Wilde in Despicable Me 2, and despite Lucy Wilde attempting to attack him out of misunderstanding as she thought Dave was something dangerous, the latter did not show grudge against her at all.
History[]
Minions[]
Throughout decades, the Minions were born from the ocean to find a master to serve, from T-Rex to Blue Coats. However, they miserably failed throughout the years, until Kevin approaches into the Minions' support. While Kevin, Bob and Stuart embark out of the Ice Cave to search for a new boss, the minions play soccer desperately in Minion Ice Cave. Dave suddenly exclaims that he found a new boss, Yetis, and the minions gather to take a look; Dave quiets his tribe down so that the yeti can speak, though it just blows a raspberry.
Later, when the minions are driven and pursued by yetis after accidentally knocking out the leading yeti, they are disoriented. A minion takes out a map, "Walter," but he does not know how to read it, so Dave snatches it off of him and announces the direction to head to. Suddenly, however, much to Dave and the other Minions' dismay, a wrathful and aggressive bear wakes up beneath the snowy land, promoting the minions to flee in horror. Being assisted by the map, Dave becomes the true leader of his tribe and leads them to England (where Kevin, Stuart and Bob), but the group first arrives in Australia, India, and the United States. At the gap between Australia and India, he jumps down from the cliff first, but his jacket is stuck by a tree while other minions pile up for making a bridge, while Dave yells for help; when they are in the United States, they even go into a recording of the moon-landing scene, indicating that the news is a hoax. Finally, the minions arrive at Westminster by the subway; Dave and the other minions march though the platform in excitement with minionese stating: "mind the gap."
Later, upon the aftermath of the first battle between Kevin and Scarlet Overkill (and Scarlet attempts to eliminate Dave and the other minions), Dave and the other minions reunite with Kevin, Bob and Stuart, but not before Scarlet Overkill recovers from her injuries rightfully given from Kevin, and prepares to eliminate the Minions, including Dave, before Kevin sacrifices himself to defeat her.
Despicable Me[]
When Gru is telling the minions of his next great plan and before Gru can announce the Minions on what they are going to steal, they whip out their weapons, including Dave, who arms himself with a rocket launcher, which he accidentally fires into a group of Minions. After being scolded by Gru, Dave utters "Ditto!" as an apology. Pedro walks over to Dave while Gru is telling him to stop and punches him in the shoulder for payback.
Later that night, he asks Gru for goodnight kisses for him and the minions in a show of politeness. He is the first one to be kissed by Gru. After he is kissed by Gru, he comes back and cuts in line. However, Gru recognizes him and asks, "Didn't I get you already?" Dave gets hit at the back of the head by Jorge, while Dave laughs in pure humor.
Despicable Me 2[]
Dave, Stuart and Tim are in a cupcake shop in the Paradise Shopping Mall, along with Gru, who works undercover as the owner of the shop with Lucy being assigned as his partner. Dave introduces himself to Lucy by showing his talented cupcake, which she kicks into the air and smashes onto the bench. Directly after Lucy crushed the cupcake, she then grabs Dave and pins him against the bench – prepared to hit him. After Lucy learns that Dave works for Gru, she tells Dave that he is free to go. Dave starts to walk away, but before that, he looks up to Lucy and starts daydreaming about dating her, leaving him air-kissing. When Gru and Lucy are performing their first mission to expose El Macho, Dave is waiting by the car outside together with Stuart.
Later, he is having an ice cream party with Stuart, Jerry, Carl, and Kevin. Gru interrupts the party and asks Kevin and Jerry to watch the girls, while he asks Dave and Stuart to follow him. When Dave gets the call from Gru to rescue him and Lucy, Dave starts acting right away. Crashing through the mall's entrance (Dave is the one steering the car and Stuart is pushing the accelerator), Dave and Stuart miss pulling over for Gru and Lucy twice. Before Eduardo can catch them, Dave and Stuart knock him out with the car. Lucy opens the car door and is greeted by Dave and Stuart (who seems to have a crush on her as well, shown when he pushes the accelerator).
After Dr. Nefario tells Gru that Eduardo has kidnapped Lucy, Gru picks Stuart and Dave – who are at the middle of a video game – to follow him to rescue Lucy.
As a disguise of a Purple Minion, Dave and Stuart are painted purple, in order to fit in with the crowd of the mutated Purple Minions. Dave figures out how to communicate with them in order to distract them, though it all ends in him ruining his disguise and Gru's plan for rescuing Lucy by a Purple Minion blowing too much raspberry on him, prompting Dave to rub off the spit from the Purple Minion in disgust, which accidentally caused him to rub off the purple paint from his face and exposed himself to the Purple Minions. Dave, Stuart and Gru are forced to run for their lives, managing to outwit the purple crowd by climbing up a tree to Macho's estates until eventually cornered at one of the estate's turrets. Thankfully, Dr. Nefario, Margo, Edith and Agnes and the traditional minions turn up in the airship and fire a PX-41 antidote-laced jelly at the mutated minions, reverting them back to their traditional incarnations. When El Macho is about to press a button on the remote that would send the rocket that Lucy was tied to into a volcano, Dave swoops in on a rope and grabs the remote, Tarzan-style, but unfortunately smacks a roof support and drops the remote. Despite this, this ultimately prevents El Macho from doing so.
Dave later signs "I Swear," along with Stuart, Kevin, and Jerry at Gru and Lucy's wedding and appears with other characters when attempting to be in the family photo.
Despicable Me 3[]
Dave is introduced in the girls' honeymoon party (Margo, Edith and Agnes) for Gru and Lucy. Dave, along with Jerry, are dressed in Hawaii-like costumes and they sing, 'Tiki Tiki Babeloo,' together as a form of amusement for the family. Later, after all the other Minions decide to leave Gru, he and Jerry are "promoted" since they are the only minions that remain with Gru. Due to this, Dave and Jerry come with Gru's family to see Dru, where they each befriend a pig and often make mischief inside Dru's mansion, such as attacking Fritz because a "kick me" sign is posted behind him by Edith, or laughing at the statues of Dru's ancestors out of humor.
Despicable Me 4[]
Dave was one of the minions to be choosing along with Tim, Mel, Jerry and Gus in Silas Ramsbottom's experiment to be transformed into the Mega Minions to defeat Maxime Le Mal.
Trivia[]
- Dave is one of the two minions who were not kidnapped and transformed into a Purple Minion in Despicable Me 2, the other being Stuart.
- Dave is currently one of the only minions (along with Stuart and Mark) that makes his appearance in all films of the entire Despicable Me franchise. Dave is also the only Mega Minion with this distinction. However, Despicable Me 4 is the first film where Dave is not involved with Gru.
- Dave is one of the only two minions that never went to State Prison, the other being Jerry.
