The Crying Child is the main protagonist of Five Nights at Freddy's 4 minigames.

He is around 10 years old, has brown hair, has a black and white shirt.

Biography

The Crying Child is young kid who's having a birthday party at Fredbear's Pizzeria in a few days, which he is upset about because he has an intense fear of animatronics due to his older brother Michael Afton constantly scaring him with a Foxy mask, and also because of local rumors that the animatronics stuff people in suits at night.

Each night, the Crying Child must survive the Nightmare Animatronics in his house. After completing each night, the player unlocks minigames the reveal the story of the game. In the minigames, the Crying Child is accompanied by a Fredbear Plush who helps him. At the end of each mini game, he is scared by his older brother.

He wonders around his neighborhood and meets different kids around his age, who have all been invited to his birthday party, such as Kid with a Balloon, Pigtailed Girl, a Green Shirt kid with a Spring Bonnie toy, and a Rude Kid with a Green Shirt who makes fun of him.

In the final minigame, he is bullied by his brother and his brother's teenage friends. Later that day at his birthday party, he is killed when his brother and friends try to forcibly stuff him in Fredbear's mouth.

After his death, his spirit is approached by his Fredbear Plush, who tells him he is sorry and that he will "put him back together". The Crying Child then posses Golden Freddy along with Cassidy (as speculated by fans who believe the Two-Spirited Golden Freddy Theory).

Speculation

• It is heavily implied that Crying Child is the son of William Afton.
• The Crying Child bears a striking similarity to the fifth child in the Happiest Day minigame, with both being the birthday boys, and both being associated with the same animatronic. Additionally, the layout of the minigame perfectly mirrors the layout of Fredbear's Family Diner during the child's death. Because of this, it's heavily speculated that the child in the Happiest Day minigames was indeed the Crying Child fulfilling unfinished business by finally celebrating his birthday in peace so he may pass on to the afterlife.
• On February 2, 2021, a Reddit user named u/Wolfie1740Kingdom made a post on the official Five Nights at Freddy's subreddit in which he possibly figured out Crying Child's first name, it being "Evan", using the Five Nights at Freddy's: Survival Logbook. Scott Cawthon has not yet confirmed this.
  • This is supported by the Fazbear Frights story The Real Jake, where the brother of a man named Michael, who is believed by some to represent Michael Afton, is also named Evan. As it is theorized Michael Afton is the Crying Child's brother, the other son would be named Evan.
  • u/Wolfie1740Kingdom himself doubts the likeliness of the Evan code nowadays.
