Cross Marian is the overarching protagonist in the manga/anime series D.Gray-man. He's an exorcist and a general of the Black Order. Though technically a member of the European Branch, he is notorious for disappearing for years at a time and is extremely reluctant to return to headquarters. He was Allen Walker's mentor and one of the few people who knows Mana Walker's true intentions regarding the boy. Cross was the leader of the Marian Unit.
Appearance[]
Cross is tall and appears to be in his late 20s or early 30s, though he is probably older. Allen notes that Cross doesn't seem to have aged at all since he met him.
Cross's most distinctive features are his long, vibrant red hair and a Phantom of the Opera-like mask on the right side of his face. He has a beard, his eyes are the same red as his hair, and he wears wire-framed glasses. In the manga, when Allen is saved by Cross in the Noah's Ark Arc, he is seen wearing a skull cap, but afterwards, presumably due to a curse, the skull has shrunk to a cross shape over his right eye. He wears explorer-like clothing and a hat, but wore a kimono when hiding in Edo. He always carries a weapon in a leg holster.
Personality[]
Cross Marian is a man who loves gambling and drinking. When he gambles, he makes extravagant bets and never pays when he loses, making Allen or someone else pay. There are very few things he loves. Women, wine, money, and beautiful things. During battles, he has a cold and indifferent attitude.
He is portrayed as a cranky and demanding person. In fact, he always calls Allen a "stupid disciple" or a stupid student. Most members of the Black Order considered Cross a great person, and he was. However, he was usually rude and harsh towards Allen. This may be because he had to be strict with him because Allen was his disciple. Allen is afraid of him. This is suggested by the fact that most of his flashback scenes with Cross end with some kind of unfortunate experience for him. Allen claims that Cross is a demon. Despite this, Cross has shown kindness beneath his rough exterior towards people such as Allen, Anita, and Lenalee. However, his gentle side seems to show up towards women in general.
