Catherine McDonald is one of the major characters of Kaze no Stigma series. She's an American En-Jutsu user.
Personality[]
Catherine initially comes off as someone who, like Ayano Kannagi, is very arrogant and cocky with her abilities. However, as the series progresses, she learns to be more humble, especially after training under Kazuma Yagami. They often brag about their family's prowess, whether it's their wealth or their vast wealth.
Abilities[]
Unlike other fire wielders in the series, Catherine and her family have the unique ability to harness the power of multiple fire spirits into one virtual character. These spirit beasts have some degree of autonomy, but are mostly controlled by Catherine.
Azazel - The first spirit beast used by Catherine in the introductory episode. Despite being the first spiritual beast used by Catherine, Azazel has never appeared since his debut.
Metatron - The second spirit beast to debut Catherine. It looks like a Greek angel statue and has a sword. The strongest spirit beast that Catherine is proud of, and is extremely powerful. Ayano claimed that she sensed the presence of "hundreds, if not thousands, of fire spirits" within Metatron, who is good at swordsmanship and can stand shoulder to shoulder with Ayano. This is the fire Catherine claims can burn fire users, but has never been tested. It is not immortal, as its alien flame is an unnatural distortion, as shown when Kazuma was cut multiple times by wind magic and was unable to regenerate, so it was very weak against Kannagi's purifying flame.
Wisps - The third spirit beast that Catherine used in her second battle with Ayano. Wisp can form a circle to surround enemies and fire lasers.

Kazuma Yagami[]
Catherine apparently didn't notice Kazuma during their first encounter, but after insulting her family during their second encounter, she saw him as a "pathetic wind master". Despite her previous insults, she decided to take him on as a coach when she learned that he could be bought out of his services by Kannagis that she decided to.
It was during their training that she fell in love with Kazuma. She bet that Kazuma would return to America with her. During the Pandemonium Arc, Catherine, who was currently working for Officer Kirika Tachibana, ran into a naked Kazuma at the Marunage Hot Springs again, much to her dismay and later joy, fighting Kazuma and wounding him. She was upset when she heard that she believed.
Ayano Kannagi[]
Catherine originally came to Japan to defeat Ayano and claim her family's title as the family's strongest fire wizard, so they soon became rivals and fought on their first encounter.
Even though Catherine lost her first fight, she considered herself superior to Ayano and always despised her until their second fight. However, when he fell in love with Kazuma during training, he became her romantic rival. After their battle, they learned to respect each other. Ayano reluctantly admitted that she was the only one who could stop him.
Etymology[]
- The name Catherine means "pure, clear" in Latin.
- Catherine's surname McDonald means "son of Donald" and derives her name from the Scottish Gaelic Mac Dumnuill, meaning "ruler of the world".
- In Scotland, the McDonald surname most often derives from Scottish settlers who arrived in Ulster in the 17th century.
