Blue Diamond is a major antagonist turned supporting protagonist in Steven Universe.
She is one of the Gem Matriarchs on Gem Homeworld and a member of the Great Diamond Authority ruling over Homeworld. Blue Diamond was apparently responsible for overseeing attempted colonization of Earth, and later, the attempts to quell the rebellion of the Crystal Gems.
She is voiced by Irish singer Lisa Hannigan.
Appearance[]
As one of the rulers of Homeworld, Blue Diamond has a massive size, with her towering height making her own Pearl appear tiny in comparison. However, her somewhat hunched posture, combined with her long, sweeping cloak, gives her a relatively smaller and more despondent silhouette than if she were standing straight.
Her complexion is azure, and she has long, straight, alice blue hair which curls inward at the ends. Two noticeable and symmetrical locks of her hair curl and point inwards towards her face just below her cheekbones. A unique feature of her hair are two lengths of that lead from each side of her head and physically connect on her chest just below her gem, giving it an almost shawl-like appearance. She has a long ovoid face, a full upper lip, and a straight nose. She also possesses large, sad, downward-slanting eyes with bold mascara on the lower lashes, giving the appearance of a weeping woman – most likely due to her depression over the supposed shattering of Pink Diamond. Her irises are cyan with black diamond-shaped pupils and she has thin arching eyebrows.
Her gemstone is located on her chest above her sternum, and she wears a long navy blue cloak that touches the ground. Underneath the upper part of her cloak, she wears a navy blue hood. Her height is similar to Yellow Diamond, only obscured by her hunched posture making her look shorter.
Personality[]
Blue Diamond's debut portrays her as a very good-natured and mellow Diamond who treats high-ranking members of her court with respect. According to Holly Blue Agate, Blue Diamond has a reputation for mercy, sympathy, and forgiveness. "Saving" Greg from the threat of the Cluster after taking a liking to him, unaware that the Cluster is formerly inactive, demonstrates this. However, as with Yellow Diamond, her true nature may be at odds with her reputation, as she sentences Ruby to shattering for accidentally fusing with Sapphire while trying to do her job and saving her by accident. However, it is unknown if her personality has changed over the millennia after Pink Diamond's death. Blue Diamond's temperament appears to have changed significantly in the 5,000 years following the death of Pink Diamond. She was in a state of great depression, still mourning over the shattering of her fellow diamond.
She is unable to let go of the past, always becoming fixated on preserving Pink Diamond's legacy. Her efforts to maintain the late diamond's zoo, save Earth specimens from the Cluster's emergence, and her refusal to shatter the rose quartzes that once served under Pink Diamond shows this behavior. She continues to regard the Earth as Pink Diamond's colony, and, due to being unaware that the Cluster is bubbled, is visibly saddened by the fact that the planet will eventually be destroyed. Additionally, Blue Diamond seems to misunderstand humans, given by how she was surprised that Greg was able to comprehend and sympathize with her pain of always losing a loved one.
As shown in the episode "The Trial", Blue Diamond is extremely opportunistic, diplomatic, and dexterous. Against Yellow Diamond's wishes, she allowed Steven to continue making his case during his trial, though she did lose her temper when his recounting of events differed. She nonetheless seemed to want to hear Blue Zircon's theory on how and why Pink Diamond was shattered. When Yellow Diamond snaps and poofs both Zircons present at the trial, Blue Diamond confronts her and scolds her for not having enough restraint to hear the case out. This shows that Blue Diamond may be as merciful, forgiving, and sympathetic as her gems claim – at the very least, she certainly has a greater respect for due process and an interest in the truth.
However, despite her more merciful and forgiving nature, she is shown to be extremely unforgiving and derogatory towards fusions of different gems, something that she shares in common with Yellow Diamond. This is first seen when Blue Diamond sentenced Ruby to be shattered just for fusing with Sapphire out of a desire to save her life, particularly demonstrating her ruthlessness towards these situations. Even after 5,000 years, her attitude towards these situations has not changed. When conversing with Steven, she mocked Garnet's fusion and stated that she didn't belong anywhere. Then, when Steven and Connie fused, Blue Diamond lashed out at Steven, viewing such a fusion as extremely inappropriate, and demanded they unfuse immediately. She also had no qualms about locking Steven up as punishment for his actions.
Despite this, her tyrannical ways appear to be merely her enforcing White Diamond's rules on Homeworld, and that she and Yellow are in fact miserable under White's rule. She is also shown to be empathetic enough to understand that the Homeworld Gems are suffering because of the Diamonds' ways. After making amends with White, Blue appears to be much kinder and more benign, accepting the Crystal Gems and Off Colors, in addition to being the one to figure out how the Diamonds can cure the Corrupted Gems.
Synopsis[]
Blue Diamond fell into depression following the apparent death of her sister Pink Diamond, before learning the latter's death was faked.
Heroic actions[]
- Kidnapping Greg for her Human Zoo, which she sees as an act of kindness to Greg due to her believing that the Cluster is still going to destroy the Earth.
- She wishes to atone for ignoring Pink Diamond's pleas to spare the Earth by preserving the latter's legacy.
- She wants to keep humans in a nature preserve in memory of Pink Diamond.
- Even during the Rebellion, Blue Diamond is shown to have a respect for high-ranking members of her court, as she thanks Sapphire for her vision.
- She is perhaps the first Homeworld Gem to quickly realize that humans are capable of empathy and feeling loss, and she lifts her veil and lowers herself to Greg's eye level to speak with him as an equal.
- Her desire to preserve Pink Diamond's legacy includes keeping the humans in the Zoo well cared for and keeping the Earth Quartzes and other Rose Quartzes alive (even if the latter are bubbled), both of which Yellow Diamond finds absurd. She also intended to save Greg by kidnapping him and taking him to the Zoo.
- She keeps the trial going, wanting to hear Steven and his defense Zircon out, and won't execute Steven outright when he demands to be punished for Rose's crimes.
- When Yellow Diamond starts going ballistic on the Zircons when the Defense one implies that the Diamonds shattered Pink, Blue steps in on their behalf.
- She helps Steven and Connie rescue Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl's gemstones after Steven told her the truth.
- She helps the Gems, Greg, and Connie to get Steven back to normal along with Yellow Diamond, White Diamond, Spinel, and the Cluster.
Trivia[]
- Prior to her redemption, Blue Diamond served as a dark parallel of what Pearl had become had she not decided to come to terms with Rose Quartz’s death and moved on with her life.
- "I Am My Monster" is the final episode to feature Blue Diamond.
