~ Benson's catchphrase

GET BACK TO WORK!
~ Benson's second catchphrase

Benson Dunwoody is the deuteragonist of Cartoon Network's Regular Show franchise. He is Mordecai and Rigby's former boss.

When calm, he sounds almost monotone, but when angry, outraged and mad, he turns red and screams in an ear-bleeding way. He cannot stand Mordecai and Rigby's disobedience and irresponsible behavior, and threatens to fire them. Next to Skips, he is also the only serious worker of the park, although he still seems to have a sense of humor.

He was voiced by Sam Marin, who also voices Pops Maellard and Muscle Man.

Appearance[]

Benson is an anthropomorphic gumball machine with pinkish purple/red gumballs enclosed by a glass dome and sunken eyes. The gumballs may act as facial hair for Benson, as noted by story boarder Benton Connor. It is also worth noting that the dispenser slot sits in a rather phallic position. The turn switch on his chest is shaped like a heart symbol, hinting that's probably where his heart is. When his latch is open, it is considered to him being naked, as well as his private area.

Personality[]

Benson is easily the most short-tempered character in the show. Whenever he is greatly angry and upset (usually in the form of Mordecai and Rigby slacking off), Benson loses his temper, turning varying shades of red. He'll even make big deals out of the smallest of things. Aside from this, Benson is usually calm, and in fact, enjoys being social, even with his two most disliked people. Whenever Benson is in a good mood (which happens more often after the episode Benson Be Gone), Benson rewards his employees with time off, usually in the form of nightly entertainment or dining out. Though despite his selfishness and aggressive tendencies on Mordecai and Rigby on blind trust he is shown that he really loves Mordecai and Rigby he admits it before falling into the ground.

Season 4[]

  • Exit 9B: Although he was brainwashed by Garrett Bobby Ferguson Jr., in this scenario he was close to angrily killing Mordecai and Rigby when they attempt to reason with him before regaining his memory when Mordecai and Rigby annoy him with his antics. This redeems him, as he signs the document as well.
  • Sandwich of Death: Benson falls ill and almost gets himself killed because of this. He is cured by the end of the episode and survives. However, despite of that, it served as karma for Benson for eating Mordecai and Rigby's burgers.
  • 150 Piece Kit: Benson went to the stage instead of the Drumatron VI. After introducing himself, he begins the solo. The band members try to stop him, but Mordecai, Rigby, and the rest of the park staff decide to help. As the solo progresses, it comes to life to stop Benson, trying to get past the park staff. He then seats himself onto a drumming platform, which is connected to a crane, and drops a large cymbal on the ground and continues the solo. As he finishes the solo, he pulls a lever, but it attempts to stop him, only allowing him to continue the solo one handed, causing his skeleton to catch on fire (hence Rigby's rumor). Later he creates a force powerful enough to knock the hair off of the band members.
  • The Christmas Special: He helped Mordecai, Rigby and Santa Claus to defeat Quiglin and his henchmen to save Christmas.
  • Fool Me Twice: Benson passes most of the obstacles surprisingly well, and Mordecai and Rigby don't give up, mainly because Benson urges them; making Shinehara's fist grow to giant size because he hasn't punched anyone yet. When they reach the final obstacle, a pit of lava with swinging overhead boulders, Shinehara attacks them while concealing something under his cape, revealed to be his gigantic fist. He screams at them that he's going to punch them even though they haven't given up because it's his show. They distract him by telling him that Mount Fuji has appeared behind him before shoving him over the edge. Thus being fooled three times, Shinehara punches himself in the face before being burned in the lava.
  • Skips' Stress: He helped Skips along Mordecai, Rigby and Pops to defeat his stress, and later their stress as well.
  • Country Club: Benson, Skips, Pops, Muscle Man, High Five Ghost, and Thomas come crashing through the country club gate, in a truck coming to help the guys. Benson is mad that Mordecai and Rigby didn't tell him, and that the country club had taken all their stuff, since apparently they had taken a boombox from himself. Later he tells Mordecai and Rigby that he is proud that they could stand up, and get their stuff back.
  • Blind Trust: Benson says that he should've trusted them more, while Mordecai admits that they slack off sometimes. They even say that they love each other, before they land in the river, washing out of a pipe on to the road in front of Pops.
  • World's Best Boss: He defends all his friends from Doug McFarland.
  • Sleep Fighter: He helps Muscle Man from his nightmares.
  • Party Re-Pete: Benson finds a huge RadiCola soda can with full content and asks the Pete clone if he wants one. He nods and with that Benson uses a hose to spray all the soda into him, causing him to bloat, float, and explode. The police spot the explosion and come "really fast", as pointed out by Rigby. One of them finds the suit guys who are inferred to have been on a Most Wanted type list as he quickly noticed they were holding a company of underground party cloning. They are arrested with vows from the criminals that they will be back for Benson. Benson, sad from realizing he has to get back to his boring job, gets a celebration party thrown for him courtesy of Skips, Rigby, and Mordecai.

He afterwards helps to save Pops and fights many surfers at there.
  • Return of Mordecai and the Rigbys:. When they are told it was a lie, Mordecai messes with Benson's drum kit and Benson does the same with Mordecai's guitar. Later Benson and Mordecai apologized themselves and touched with the others "Keeping it Cool".

In an alternate future, Benson was Rigby's second-in-command for The Rangers to save the timeline against an evil cyborg named Mr. Ross and his army when he is erasing time. As well, he and rangers were prepared to destroy the timenado, after the others were killed by Mr. Ross' soldiers with an evil Mordecai working with him and later Future Benson sacrifices fror Rigby and his friends and he was killed by Ross.

In the present when Mordecai and Rigby were slacking-off at the coffee, because they keep themselves from being fired when they run late for work and gaves that consequences printed to them and gires them, later Rigby explains that Mordecai and him tu late due to getting breakfast burritos from a food truck for Benson, after that, he hires again Mordecai and Rigby. Later he gets yells to them for am unknown ship , because Future Rigby appears and tells the employees that when Mordecai and Rigby were in high school, they created a time machine that backfired and was destroyed, but created a "Timenado", a tornado that can travel through space and time, and that they got expelled for blowing up the science lab. Also, future Rigby reveals that Mordecai shot him, shocking the park residences that Mordecai and Rigby have receded their relationship. Then future Rigby tells his younger self that he'll soon have to tell Mordecai a secret that will help save the universe-even if it will cost him their friendship- before he dies.

Meanwhile in the house after Future Rigby's death, when Benson wanted to know about The Timenado, Muscle Man gets angry to them and find a weapon to play, but accidentally destroyed Benson's car, but Benson felts minor sadness for his own car getting destroyed. After that, he tooks his things to travel in the past.

In the past when The Park Gang traveled to The Park, Mordecai and Rigby mocked and laughed at Benson's past self's hair, later when Skips, Muscle Man, and High Five Ghost stay behind to fix the ship while Benson and Pops went with Mordecai and Rigby to West Anderson preparatory, Benson an Pops get bullied by Francis Jablonski (Rigby's bully) and his friends. After that, Mordecai and Rigby (with their past selves) alongside Benson and Pops destroyed the wayback machine and celebrated to save the future.

When the Timenado was repairing the past Mordecai and Rigby, Rigby warned to The Gang because the timenado was repairing he fights against Ross and his apprentice Future Mordecai and was defeated. Later Benson yells to past Rigby for repair the second time machine, when Rigby reads the letter admites that he never passed to the College U, he and others get shocked and angry to him.

Before dying, future Mordecai gives his present version his ship (which is also a time machine) and tells him to patch things up, saying what Rigby did was no excuse to side with Ross. As the group tries to rebound, a distress call from future Gene the Vending Machine prompts them to help out.

After Future Ross' defeat, when past Rigby gets apologized by past Ross, the Park Gang greets the past Mordecai and Rigby, and they return to the present. The next day, as Benson catches them away from the park, the pair race back in future Rigby's spaceship/time machine with Rigby saying they'll "never be late again".

Trivia[]

  • The name Benson is of English origin. The meaning of Benson is "son of ben".
  • In "Rage Against the TV", it's revealed that he lives in an apartment and not at the park with the others.
  • He is a skilled drummer, as seen in the episode This Is My Jam. He says his ways of drumming are a "funny story", but was interrupted by Rigby before he could say anymore.
  • In "Brain Eraser", Benson's towel fell off, revealing an open hatch (which is his possible "junkmail"); this may be his equivalent of being naked.
    • On a side note, previously in Latin America, when Benson's towel falls off, that part is cut.
  • The name Benson was taken from J.G Quintel's student film The Naive Man from Lolliland because the Lolliland Man's driver is named Benson, later used for the gumball machine manager in the series.
  • After the events of Benson Be Gone, he loosened up slightly - while he still gets angry if Mordecai and Rigby mess up, he is more willing to accept their apologies, and has even taken them on nights out.
    • He seems much nicer in Over The Top, due to the fact that Mordecai and Rigby don't play as the main protagonists and are not causing any chaos.
  • At the 2012 Comic Con, it was revealed that following the episode "Think Positive", Benson's voice actor, Sam Marin, developed a migraine and lost his voice after Benson's tirade.
  • In Think Positive, when he was a child, he used to be the quiet one in his family, ironically enough, until his father told him that yelling is the key to get anything he wants in life.
  • Benson has fired employees seven times in the series so far: in Don (Episode), he fired Muscle Man, in Benson Be Gone, he fired Susan, in Really Real Wrestling, he fired Mordecai and Rigby, in Under the Hood, he fired Muscle Man and Hi Five Ghost, in Weekend at Benson's, he fired Mordecai and Rigby again, and in Replaced, he fired Mordecai and Rigby for the third time, and in Muscle Mentor, he fired Rigby.
  • Benson usually turns red when he is angry, however, there is one exception at the end of Karaoke Video, where Benson turns rather a shade of fuchsia pink.
  • Although he didn't appear in the episode Rigby's Body, it appears that he made Mordecai and Rigby work at the Snack Bar to pay off all they ate (because only Pops, the unofficial owner and Benson's other boss, can have free snacks while working there).
