Allen Walker is one of the main protagonists of the anime and manga series, D.Gray Man. He's a former exorcist and former member of the European Branch of the Black Order. He is the adopted son of Mana Walker and a former disciple of Cross Marian.

Appearance[]

Allen is a young man of average height with a slender, muscular build, but has become increasingly scarred over time. He has medium length grey/white hair that now reaches his shoulders, silver/grey eyes and pale skin.

Allen has an unusual scar on the left side of his face, starting from a pentagram on his forehead, tracing a line that cuts his eyebrow and scars his eyelid, hooking slightly at his cheekbone, and running down along his cheek near his chin. He also has an extra scar that runs parallel to his lower eyelid. This scar was given to Allen by the Mana Walker after he transformed him into an Akuma. This scar is also the source of his cursed eyes, which allow him to sense Akuma and see the souls of humans bound to his body.

Allen has also been described as "cute" or "angelic" by other characters.

Allen's parasitic Innocence takes the form of his entire left arm below the shoulder. Originally red with visible veins, after summoning the Crown Clown for the first time, his skin becomes darker and scaly, his nails turn black and grow longer, and an arrow-shaped pattern forms along his shoulder blades.

Due to his strange hair color and odd arms, Allen tends to cover his hair with a hat or hood and wear gloves and long-sleeved shirts to prevent his arms from being seen.

Allen's exorcist uniform often consists of a concealing jacket and gloves, pants and sturdy boots, but Allen's latest uniform features a shorter jacket and capri-like pants. He always requests to hide his hands, including his gloves, but recently he has become more comfortable showing his hands when he is with his companions.

Allen's natural hair color was brown. The shock of reviving and destroying Mana as an Akuma caused his hair to turn white. Allen reveals to Timothy that he has tried to dye it many times, but gave up because it would quickly turn back to white.

When in his Noah form, Allen has a typical dark skin color and amber eyes. Unlike other Noahs, his hair seems to remain white, like Wisely's.

Personality[]

Allen usually portrays himself as a kind, generous, and very polite young man. He refuses to accept gifts from others that he feels he should not have earned. He tends to be very self-sacrificing, often willing to undergo devastating physical and emotional suffering for others. This trait is what has angered some of his comrades and friends, especially Yu Kanda and Lenalee Lee. Allen also has a modest and borderline naive appearance, despite the troubled life his master Cross Marian forced him to live. Due to his cursed eyes that allow him to see the souls of humans bound to Akuma, Allen values Akuma as much as humans, and has sworn his left arm and the right to save humans to save Akuma. Kanda feels Allen is too idealistic, and without hesitation tells him that an Exorcist is simply a destroyer and can never be someone's savior. However, Allen insists that an Exorcist is a destroyer and cannot be a savior, emphasizing that he was a "destroyer who saves".

As time passed, Allen's personality changed. His "dark side", a result of honing his poker skills to pay off Cross's debt, appeared several times, shocking and scaring those around him. He was an expert at cheating at poker, and it was only revealed when he reduced Tyki Mikk and his two friends to their underwear without anyone noticing. He also began to speak more casually in front of his close friends, which Lenalee and Johnny Gill noticed and encouraged them. The one person who can always make Allen break the mold of politeness is fellow exorcist Yu Kanda. As Noise Marie says, their opinions differ but their "darkness" is similar, so they are always clashing and sometimes arguing over trivial issues. Also, due to their past, he has a strong hatred for the Millennium Earl.

As a child, Allen was abandoned by his family and sold to the circus because of his "abnormal" left arm. He was taken in by Mana Walker and began his journey with him. Mana later dies, and in despair, Allen is tricked by the Millennium Earl into bringing him back. Enraged, Mana curses Allen, slashing the left side of his face. Allen's arm, which was actually a part of Innocence, activates without his consent and begins to chase Mana. After Mana tells Allen that she loves him and begs him to destroy it, Allen's arm exorcises Mana's akuma, killing him a second time. After this ordeal, Allen's hair turns white in a shock, and his left eye is cursed to forever see the tormented souls bound to akuma, and he resolves to live for the akuma.

Originally, Allen was a crude and spiteful child, rude and very cocky, probably due to his suffering at the hands of the greedy circus ringmaster and the violent clown Cosimov. In stark contrast to the gentlemanly personality he acquired growing up, he was more honest with his thoughts. He also refrained from getting attached to others, considering friends unnecessary. Because he hoped to one day leave the ruthless circus and live his own life. However, later, he grew to love Mana dearly as he traveled with him, and considered him a father.

After spending more than a month in a lifeless and unresponsive state after Mana's death, he reappeared with Mana's personality and was much more polite. Cross seems puzzled by this development from the beginning, and expresses that he prefers Allen's "dark side" as it is closer to his previous behavior. He often says that Allen is wearing the "mask" of Mana, but the furigana actually reads as "memories," implying that Allen is still keeping Mana's memories alive through his personality to cope with the loss of Mana.

Allen seems to believe in the existence of God, but stated that he doesn't care about "such things." Allen has come to consider the Order and his allies his second "true home" after Mana, but he is not simply fighting in the name of God, but for the oath he made to Mana, his friends, and himself. He is also shown to be very resentful of Suman's vaccination after the cruel consequences of that decision resulted in Suman losing his mind while still alive. After the truth of the Second Exorcist Plan was revealed, he despises the higher-ups of the cult and their questionable methods, openly rebelling against the cult by letting Kanda and Alma escape. He also has a great distaste for the idea of joining Apocryphos after learning what they did to Cross.

Allen is a voracious eater. This is a common trait among all parasitic adaptors, but Allen's case is even more extreme. Fellow parasitic adaptor Arystar Krory believes Allen uses this as an excuse to eat more in the cult to hide his other issues.

Allen showed a shadow of pride and refused to run away from Noah even when Komui warned him. Tyki Mikk called him arrogant for believing he could take Noah without harming it.

Initially, Allen was very loyal to the Black Order, as they shared the same goal: to defeat Millennium Earl and save the world from destruction. However, upon discovering the Order's unspeakable experiments, his loyalty to them wavered as he realized the higher-ups were no different from Earl.

During the battle with Noah, Allen is imprisoned by the Order, who fear the reappearance of Nea. There, Allen is attacked by Apocryphos, a sentient Innocence that attempts to assimilate Allen's Innocence. Tyki Mikk and Road Kamelot rescue him from Apocryphos and make the Order believe that he betrayed them. However, after Tyki points out that most members of the Black Order would never see him as anything more than a Noah, and he learns from Lord that Nea spent her life protecting Mana, he realizes that not all members of the Noah Family are evil.

From there, Allen officially severs all ties with the Black Order and refuses aid from both the Order and the Noah Family.
